🕯️ Why We Don't Have a Full "Make-Your-Own Candle Bar" (But We Still Love Your Ideas!)

To our beloved Bee Coco community,

We hear you. Over the past year, so many of you have shared your love for scent, creativity, and the desire to make something uniquely yours — especially when it comes to fragrance. You've asked about opportunities to craft your own scents and candles right here with us, and we couldn't be more excited to share what's coming in 2026!

At Bee Coco Candle, safety and quality are our top priorities — always. Our candles undergo extensive testing to make sure they burn safely and consistently, and that every component — from wax to wick to fragrance — performs beautifully in harmony. That's why we do not currently offer an in-house candle bar where customers pour their own wick-candles on demand.

Standard candle bar experiences involve many variables (custom wax blends, wicks, vessels, and fragrance combinations), and without thorough testing for each permutation, dangerous burns, hot glass, soot issues, or other hazards can occur [1].

We take this responsibility seriously — we want you to enjoy your products with peace of mind, every time.

🔥 Why Safety Matters: Every Bee Coco candle undergoes up to 70 hours of burn testing before it reaches your home. That's how we ensure no tunneling, no soot, and a safe, consistent burn every time. The National Candle Association (NCA), the major U.S. trade association representing candle manufacturers, has worked with ASTM International and the CPSC since 1997 to develop industry safety standards [2].

📋 U.S. Safety Standards for Candles

Our commitment to safety is backed by recognized U.S. standards. The primary standard for candle fire safety is ASTM F2417, the Standard Specification for Fire Safety for Candles [1]. This standard establishes minimum safety requirements to provide a reasonable degree of safety for normal candle use, thereby improving personal safety and reducing fires, deaths, and injuries [1].

Key requirements of ASTM F2417 include:

  • Maximum flame height limits
  • Tip-over safety requirements
  • Secondary ignition prevention
  • End-of-useful-life specifications
  • Prevention of wick migration and leaning (the flame must not contact the container's side, which could cause glass to shatter) [3]

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) actively participates in the development of these standards. In fact, the CPSC has been involved in creating guidance for candle-making kits because of the inherent fire risks [4]. A small variation in how a consumer makes a candle — like using a different fragrance oil or not attaching the wick correctly — can lead to a dangerous, untested product [5].

The National Candle Association (NCA) has been instrumental in developing these safety standards. Since 1997, the NCA has collaborated with ASTM International and the CPSC to develop six key standards covering candle labeling, glass container safety, fire-safety design, and candle accessories [2]. The NCA represents U.S. candle manufacturers and their suppliers and promotes the safe use and enjoyment of candles [6].

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 5,894 home structure fires started by candles each year between 2018-2022. These fires caused an annual average of 63 deaths, 532 injuries, and $286 million in property damage [7]. Candles were the second leading heat source for fires originating in bedrooms [7].

The good news is that many of these fires are preventable. Over half of all candle fires start when flammable materials — furniture, bedding, curtains, or clothing — are placed too close to a lit candle [7]. In 21% of cases, the candle was left unattended or misused [7].

🎉 What Is Coming in 2026: Creative Candle Events

Because we love your creativity and want to build experiences around it, we're thrilled to announce that in 2026 we will be hosting special events and dates where you can come in and create your own wickless candle for candle warmers — a fun, safe, interactive experience! 🎨✨

These wickless candles will be:

  • ✅ Non-toxic — keeping with our commitment to clean, safe home fragrance
  • ✅ Soy-free, just like the rest of our offerings
  • ✅ Perfect for use with candle warming lamps, allowing you to enjoy lovely scent without an open flame

Why wickless? By eliminating the wick and open flame, we remove many of the risks associated with traditional candle-making while still allowing you to express your creativity. You'll be able to choose your fragrance, blend your own scent, and take home a one-of-a-kind creation — all without compromising on safety.

Stay tuned — we'll be sharing the 2026 event calendar, scheduling details, and how to sign up soon! These events are all about community, creativity, and sharing scent stories together.
